Cleaning Your Gold Jewelry

Your gold jewelry is exposed to skin oil, perspiration, makeup, chemicals and more every time you wear it. It’s important to keep your jewelry clean so it always looks good and to avoid weakening its structure. You can easily care for your jewelry at home with a few easy steps.

  • Soak your jewelry. Use 10-parts warm water and 2-parts dish soap. Soak your gold jewelry for about 2-3 hours and hen scrub with a soft toothbrush. Blot dry with a soft, lint-free cloth.
  • Use a jewelry polishing cloth. After cleaning, a quick wipe with a polishing cloth will restore its shine.
  • Use jeweler-approved cleaners. Often, you can buy a jar of jewelry cleaner from your local jeweler. These cleaners are approved for cleaning many types of jewelry. Be sure to read the label thoroughly before using to avoid any type of damage.
  • Watch for damage. When cleaning your jewelry, be on the lookout for any loose stones, weak clasps and broken chains. Get your piece to a jeweler for prompt repair.
  • Get semi-annual inspections. Most reputable jewelers will clean and inspect your fine jewelry - even if you didn’t purchase it from them. Take advantage of these services, as jewelers are specially trained to look for weakness and damage and can offer assistance if you need a repair.

Care Instructions

Khrysos 14KT gold body jewelry is crafted from solid 14-karat gold, consisting of 58.5% pure gold and 41.5% alloy metals. Pure 24KT gold is naturally very soft, so combining gold with carefully selected alloys increases its strength and durability, making 14KT gold well suited for body jewelry and everyday wear.

The alloys used in 14KT gold also influence the finished color of the jewelry. Yellow, rose, and white gold each use different alloy combinations to achieve their distinctive appearance while maintaining the same 14KT gold content.

Because 14KT gold contains alloy metals, some tarnishing or discoloration may develop over time. This is a normal characteristic of gold alloys and does not mean the jewelry is plated or that the gold is wearing away. Exposure to chlorine, perfume, cosmetics, acidic products, saltwater, and the natural oils in your skin can accelerate tarnishing.

While pure 24KT gold is highly resistant to tarnishing, its softness makes it unsuitable for many body jewelry applications. The higher alloy content of 14KT gold provides increased strength and wear resistance while maintaining the beauty and value of solid gold.

To keep Khrysos 14KT gold jewelry looking its best, clean it periodically with a jewelry polishing cloth or a cleaning solution specifically formulated for solid gold. Avoid harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaners that could damage the jewelry's finish.
